The Stepping Stones To Taking Time Out From Anxiety
A healthy distraction
Anxiety forms because we have an overactive brain. This isn’t a bad thing, but, surely we all could benefit from calming down, and not letting our excessive thoughts overwhelm us, which is easier said than done when you have concerns as a parent. Naturally, one bad thought can add to another, and they can compound to form a big ball of anxiety. This is why healthy distractions are something we can all benefit from.
By having some kind of healthy hobby that diverts your attention, this is a great place to start. Believe it or not, an immersive game can help to distract, and you can get so many different ones on your phone now, you could get Final Fantasy 15 or a puzzle game, or Sudoku. And if your view is that games are for kids, they can be, as no doubt your young ones have some sort of interest in them, but there are so many out there for adults that need a little bit of entertainment to distract them from their morning commute, or other issues in their life.
In some ways, playing a game that requires all your attention is a bit like a meditation. The great thing about this in comparison to passively watching TV, is that your brain is actively engaged. This is beneficial, especially in terms of creating neural pathways, and strengthening your mind. This may sound far-fetched, but actually, playing games is very good for your brain!
Tackling your mindset
Anxiety is all about how we perceive ourselves. As a result, by tackling how you think, and learning to reset these negative aspects of self talk, you can begin to turn your life around. This is why something like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is so beneficial, because it’s a simple routine that you can do at your own pace.
There are courses online you can do, but also, if you’ve tried to do this before, it’s all about integrating these practices into your daily life. By implementing a daily practice, these notions of routine are what your brain needs in which to function properly. This, again, is like a healthy distraction. And this is why some people meditate twice a day, others do yoga, others go for a run, and others play computer games.
Whatever is good for you, implementing a daily practice in which to sit back, relax, and take stock in yourself, is going to be the way in which you will progress with your life. Taking a break from anxiety is all about starting small. And if you can spend just a minute of your day feeling calm, this is a victory.
