What’s Involved in Choosing a Good Mattress?
Primarily, a good mattress will have the attributes of comfort and durability. You want to be able to get a good night’s rest, obviously; but you also want the bedding to last. These days, with the range of available materials, you can benefit from even more positive attributes – some mattresses are naturally antimicrobial and malleable to suit different weights.
Since e-commerce has exploded in popularity in the last decade, chances are you shop for your mattress online. You cannot directly test the mattress in this case, but there are other ways to ensure you get something that works for you. In the following, we take a look at the different kinds of mattresses, and what each has to offer.
Air Mattresses
These tend to be the adjustable kind when they’re high-quality. Unless you’re going for the floor model that’s more of a roll-out, inflatable bed, only the top layer of a quality air mattress is pumped with air. Foam supports the top layer and provides the necessary pressure. As for the air-filled portion, this can often be altered to the preferences of the consumer. Usually, if you want the ability to do it, yourself, the cost is higher; otherwise, premade versions are available for purchase. Understand what the different pressure measurements translate to so that the air mattress you get suits your comfort level.
Nature’s Rubber – Latex Mattress
Latex mattresses, although expensive, have been growing in popularity lately because of their unique properties. They are able to maintain a certain springiness, despite their soft-to-the-touch makeup. Latex can also be chemically blended with other materials to make even more properties that are beneficial to a mattress.
Where does latex come from? There are more than 200 different kinds of plant that produce this rubber; most of it, however, derives from the tree Hevea brasiliensis – which is aptly called the rubber tree. Because of its popularity worldwide for making mattresses, the price is expected to diminish as time passes.
Memory Foam Mattress
The name memory foam is strongly suggestive of the attributes of this next mattress. It, essentially, records your last position and contours itself to fit your body. What, exactly, is the benefit of this property? For people with joint issues and arthritis, this could be essential for a good night’s rest. The material in question here is polyurethane, and it does tend to create “hot spots” as a result of the sinkage it promotes where a weight is rested upon it. The relevant metric to search for is pounds per square inch; this way, you know how much the mattress will sink. Additionally – read the reviews left by other customers.
The Original Innerspring Mattress
Ever since mattress became more than a bed of hay or leaves, the innerspring variant has been a mainstay in most mattress stores. It is relatively straightforward as far as sleeping surfaces go; the steel coils are sturdy and springy and support the topmost bedding. How much weight an innerspring mattress can support is decided entirely by the thickness of the coils. As with any mattress that you’re shopping for, be sure to glance at both the positive and negative reviews.
