About 100 million Americans live with chronic pain, and those are the ones that have been diagnosed. There are many more people that live with chronic pain, but may not be aware of the term and what it means.
What is Chronic Pain?
Definition: Chronic pain is recurring or ongoing pain that lasts more than three months. The pain can vary in degrees from mild to severe, and can cause the victim slight discomfort to completely disabled.
What are the symptoms?
Symptoms include:
- mild to severe pain
- pain that lasts more than three months
- pains are shooting, burning, numbing, aching or ‘electric’
- discomfort, tightness, soreness, stiffness
- feeling tired all the time
- inability to sleep
- extreme changes in mood
- depression
- anxiety
- increased pain with movement
What are the causes?
There are many causes of chronic pain including:
- arthritis
- an injury
- Fibromyalgia
- joint pain
- shingles
- headaches
- nerve damage
- a chronic illness
- back pain
- spinal conditions
What are the treatment options?
There are many treatment options for chronic pain including (these treatments included are the same ones used for fibromyalgia except for the medicines – ask your doctor for prescription medicine that is right for you):
- natural treatments
- physical treatments
- alternative treatments
- medicinal treatments
